“Why, sir, what is this fist bump you speak of, and is it safe?”
Maybe back in the day, and I mean way back, you could have sparked some sort of response like that. But in today’s society, there probably isn’t a single person who doesn’t know about the fist bump.
Let’s start with the basics, shall we?
First of all, most people know what it is, but just because they know it doesn’t mean they’ll always do it. You might get the occasional frown, eyebrow raise, or full facial cringe at the sheer sight of such a hand gesture. But what the hell, right? Let’s have some fun.
When going in for a fist bump, it’s always good to start with eye contact and maybe a slight nod, a simple way of saying, “Hey, what’s up?” or “Hey, I see you.” It is a friendly gesture that lets someone know you are aware of them and glad to see them.
When starting the motion, don’t run toward them. Just simply move your arm in their general direction with your hand closed in a fist. This is not a fight, and it is not a competition to see who hits harder. Take it easy.
It is really simple. Let’s try it.
Did you get it?
Great.
If not, don’t worry. You will.
Other Forms of Fist Bumps
The Flump
A fist bump and a high five instead.
The Turkey Bump
A high five followed by a hammer fist with the thumb out.
The Time Traveler
A handshake and a fist bump, because eventually you have to start over to get it right.
The Gamer’s Knuckle
A fist bump while wiggling your thumb on the side of the other person’s fist. Can you say awkward?
The Galactic Wall
Two fist bumps that do not actually touch, leaving about two inches of space between both fists.
The Jiggly Door Knob
Well, what in the world? It is basically two fist bumps, and then someone grabs the other person’s fist and jiggles it back and forth. Seriously?
So let’s not be those people unless you are with someone who knows the so-called lingo and understands which fist bump is appropriate.
Fist bump safely, and always use a great smile.
